Harvard Referencing Explained

Posted by admin on March 18, 2011

Online grammar checkerWhy do we reference?

When we form ideas, we will usually look at other similar ideas created by other authors. When building an argument, we will look at what has already been said by others. So, therefore key reason that we reference is that we need to acknowledge the original author. Otherwise, we are effectively stealing their original work and ideas. This is seen in the academic world as plagiarism. Also, this gives you the ability to directly quote their ideas which will show off your academic skills. Other key reasons include, that it is good academic practice, shows an understanding of the field and developing your academic writing skills.

Where did it come from?

it first appeared in Edward Marks’ paper ‘The embryogensis of the garden slug 1881. His paper was the first consistent use of parathensising the author and date in a citation. Edward Marks was a professor at Harvard University and that is thought to be the reason why the style of attributed to Harvard. However, Harvard University do not endorse the style itself explicitly. The style is important in academic sciences as the author and date is considered as important and fundamental over the title of the work.

What is a citation and a reference?

A citation is something that you place in your actual text, ‘citing’ someone elses work. There are two main methods of citing, directly, for example Marks (1881) commented that ‘…’ and indirect, Web services are a means of communication from machine to machine using xml files over the internet (W3Schools, 2010). A reference is the full citation description which appears in your reference list or bibliography. Examples of these are listed below:

Report Writing Software

Posted by admin on October 3, 2010

Microsoft gets quite alot of stick for products that don’t work but I have been a fan of Word 2007 in my job as an academic at John Moores University. So it’s only right that I give credit where it’s due. Yet there are many instances where it falls short. So can other report writing software and essay writing software come up to scratch?

In many ways Word and the whole Office 2007 suite is, in itself, a piece of report writing software. You can create a table of contents and activate the References ribbon with little or no hassle. But once you add the task of formatting to style and sub headings, the picture starts to become a little involved.

Report writing software does exist but, like most software, in order to get the best out of it, you need to have some idea of how to perform the task yourself before taking the shortcuts it offers. Otherwise where will you know where the shortcuts are?

Yes but most of my students would rather have the shortcuts. We all have busy lives and I for one have been in situations where my creative thought process has been fettered by technical matters. Why is that header flipping over there? Why does that thing keep appearing? We have the wonders of computing at our fingertips but sometimes when the brain is tired and the deadlines are looming, it’s just nice to get the job done.

Enter a number of templates and systems which should make the job easier. It really depends what you are being asked to do on a regular basis. If you have to do business reports and projections as part of your job or academic study, there are companies which market templates which will certainly make this easier.

The trick is to avoid going down a blind alley thinking that ONE piece of software will do everything for you. Firstly it won’t write it for you, although it might structure it. Secondly you might have to combine it with e.g. a form of referencing that you have been asked to follow.

So, say you’ve been asked to write an essay or a report and you need to use Harvard referencing to back up your findings. Not all the templates will necessarily reference to Harvard. But that’s ok because I have a guide here which will show some of the resouces online to help you do that.

So what’s on the market?

Reports:-

Practical Report Writing System is, as the name suggests a system first and foremost. The author, Daryl Grant is somewhat of a guru and claims to have written 100s of reports quickly using this system. Who am I to argue? My eye was drawn though to the report writing templates he was offering which, to me, would be worth the $37 or £25 alone. Templates for most main purposes are to be found there and I put one or two to the test and they work fine.

Kalriti’s choice of report writing templates is far greater. And yet having too many to choose from can create more problems than it solves. I would love to be able to say “you need this one for this task and that one for that.” But really the best way forward to is to project what your tutor or boss is asking for. They are catalogued together at around $10 or £7 a throw so definitely worth a look

Essays:-

Can an essay writing template actually work? Well yes and no. Again, Microsoft Word has more bells and whistles than most pieces of software. But it is a catch all. What specialist essay writing software or essay writing templates do is to guide you through the specific process which will please most recipients.

Whilst the title, Instant Essay Creator is a a tad optimistic, let us be realistic about what is being offered here. The publishers advocate the classic five paragraph approach to an essay and yes that approach is fairly watertight. But if your essay is 2,500 words, then five paragraphs of 500 words s going to look a little clunky. So adaptation might be needed, but this is easily done. Once again, I would never advocate letting a piece of software dictate your style, but as a time saving mission $37 is around the price of a text book.

Articles:-

There is much talk of article writing on the internet. As a freelance writer before I became an academic I can tell you that the best way to write is to follow the AIDA formula which is 1) Attention 2) Interest 3) Desire 4) Action.

Action: You set up a proposition. Why are more people turning to electric cars?

Interest. You entice their further interest: A recent survey by the Automobile Association pointed to a 23% in hybrid car sales

Desire: Emphasise the benefits. Most experts agree that a 30% saving in fuel costs await new buyers

Action: Sell them. Hybrid cars can be browsed and ordered online at….contact details

[tag] begin read [/tag]Obviously you will need to flesh these parts out. But 450- 500 words will satisfy most editors. If you’ve been asked to use Harvard Referencing for a report, then simply refer to my guide here.

So how does my tried and trusted tricks match up to the software on offer? Earma Brown has her 40 article writing templates. These are targeted at internet marketers primarily. But if you are a bit green on article writing generally and need a quick fix, $27 will provide you with most eventualities. My advice is to try my free tips first and then perhaps invest in Earma’s templates later. Will this cut down time? Probably. But out of the three, I’d be less inclined to jump into this one without having a go first.
